| Compositions by organ masters from Germany,
France, Italy, and Spain are heard on this CD, representing a cross-selection
of European organ repertoire from the 16th to the early 18th centuries, the
"meantone" Period. The primary characteristics of meantone tuning are the
pure major thirds and the unequal size of the different chromatic and diatonic
half steps.
Since the 1970's, Harald Vogel has been a leading advocate for the use of
meantone instruments with more than 12 notes per octave. The organ in
Göteborg, Sweden, in the Haga Church is such an instrument; both manuals
and pedal have split keys for d#/eb and g#/ab. |
Built in 1992 by John Brombaugh in Eugene, Oregon
(USA), this organ was installed as part of the large organ project of the
University of Göteborg, under the leadership of Prof. Hans Davidsson.
John Brombaugh has shaped an entire generation of organ builders in the USA
and is one of the most important trendsetters in organ building in the late
20th century. |
