| The organ in the medieval church in Noordbroek,
in the Dutch province of Groningen, was built by Arp Schnitger in 1696. Between
1808-1809, the instrument was renovated by H.H. Freytag in the style of the
Schnitger tradition. Except for a few stops in the Rückpositiv, the
old pipe work of this organ and the original voicing have been preserved.
This original instrument represents one of the most important examples of
organ culture in north Europe and is particularly suitable for the organ
music of the north German Baroque masters and of J.S. Bach. In restorations
in the 18th and early 19th centuries the instrument gained the necessary
compass for Bach's organ works.

This recording includes a wide spectrum of repertoire "around Bach"- from works by E.N. Ammerbach, organist of St. Thomas' Church in Leipzig, all the way to C.P.E. Bach and G.A. Homilius of the Bach school. J.S. Bach's partita "Sei gegrüßet, Jesu gütig" is the focal point of this CD. This piece, and others, provide an opportunity to hear a wide variety of organ sounds. Particularly beautiful are the singing principals, the elegant flutes, and the great plenum in the works of Lübeck and C.P.E. Bach. | ||
