| The Baroque cloister church in Grauhof, found
near Gosler in the northern Harz mountains, was finished in 1717. Complementing
the church architecture, the organ was built from 1734 to 1737 by Christoph
Treutmann from Magdeburg. The organ boasts three manuals and a rich pedal
division, including a 32' Posaune. Today, this organ is the largest completely
preserved instrument which combines north German and middle German organbuilding
styles from the time of J.S. Bach. In addition to original pipework, the
instrument still has its original windchests and action.

Especially noteworthy are the sounds of the
original 16', 8' and 4' string stops, which are important in the works of
J.S. Bach.
This program provides an impression of organ playing in the Bach circle. A mixture of Bach's pieces (including the famous D-Minor Toccata), and compositions from his contemporaries, J.G. Walther, G.F.Kauffmann, Georg Ph. Telemann, are included, in addition to compositions from Bach's favorite pupil, J.L. Krebs. |
